Highbrow vs. fanfics

My translation of a beloved poem by Brodsky has finally been published, in Modern Poetry in Translation, no less! https://modernpoetryintranslation.com/dont-leave-your-room-by-joseph-brodsky

Since not so many people read this translator blog, let me reveal a secret here: My German translation of Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita will be published soon. Well, Brodsky, Shklovsky, Bulgakov – that’s not a bad list. Now you might think: once you have translated “highbrow literature”, you only want to translate classics. Quite the opposite is true, however. Translating a great work is a great task, but especially after that it’s fun to deal with something more relaxed, preferably with popular novels and short stories, be it any kind of self-publishing, fanfiction (be it slash or more innocent fanfics), love poetry for one‘s girlfriend or songs by young bands. After all, the best thing about translating is the variety!
